Amending The US Constitution
Amending to the constitution is a difficult process that has only happened 17 times since this great nation was conceived.
How it is done
Step 1. Proposal
The first thing that happens is the amendment is proposed by the House and Senate or at a national convention. In order for it to make it pass this stage it must be voted on by a select amount of people within that group. If it is going through Congress than it must receive a 2/3 majority vote in approval for the new law. If it is going through a convention it must be called upon by 2/3 of the states. In other words for the proposal it must be approved by 2/3 of either group. Then it can move on to the next stage.
Step 2. Ratification
Then the proposed amendment must be ratified. This is the final step in the process of finishing the amendment. This part is done either with 3/4 of state legislature or 3/4 of conventions in all the states. This is similar with how much it needs like the first part, except this time it has to be 3/4 of the deciding groups. Then it is off to the final stage!
Step 3. Finished
Now the Amendment has been ratified it is now an amendment to the constitution. Now it is time to celebrate.
